Bitcoin holders saw a modest lift in Asian trading on Wednesday, while Zcash’s ZEC jumped 11% to about $1,260; CoinDesk linked the moves to stronger technology shares and reports around Zcash’s next upgrade. For traders, the price action came alongside a key uncertainty: Zcash’s published upgrade proposal still listed the mainnet activation height as undecided.
CoinDesk reported bitcoin up 1.3% to just above $82,700, with the move following strong results from SpaceX and Super Micro Computer. SpaceX shares rose 8% in extended trading and Super Micro gained 16%, while South Korea’s Kospi climbed 3.7% and Taiwan’s Taiex rose 1.4%. Those gains revived appetite for the AI trade, though the report does not establish that tech earnings alone drove bitcoin’s move.
What does NU7 change for Zcash users?
Zcash’s proposed NU7 upgrade targets 25-second blocks, down from 75 seconds, which should reduce the average wait for a first confirmation to about 25 seconds. The proposal also directs 60% of transaction fees out of circulation into a reserve for later distribution through block rewards. The [Zcash protocol proposal, ZIP 259](https://zips.z.cash/zip-0259) says NU7 adds no new transaction format, but makes version 4 transactions invalid after activation.
That last change has a practical limit: wallets and transaction services must stop creating version 4 transactions before the switch, and funds remaining in Zcash’s Sprout pool would become unspendable. The proposal says version 5 and version 6 transactions remain valid, subject to the upgrade’s consensus rules.
Has Zcash set a mainnet activation height?
Not in the primary proposal opened for this report: ZIP 259 still said the mainnet height was “to be set on Oct 20.” The [Zcash Foundation’s October 6 engineering update](https://forum.zcashcommunity.com/t/zf-engineering-update-21-september-5-october-2026/58059) confirms NU7 had activated on public testnet at block 4,465,026, but says no mainnet activation height had yet been set. CoinDesk reported that ZEC’s rally followed developers setting that height, but the available primary documents do not verify the claimed update.
That distinction matters for anyone planning an upgrade or a ZEC trade around the rollout: the 25-second timing and fee reserve describe proposed network rules, while a mainnet block height determines when those rules take effect. The Foundation said mainnet node operators did not need to act yet as of its update; operators should check for a newer official release and activation notice before making changes.
