You cannot yet use this announcement to move yen into dollars onchain: SBI Holdings and Startale say they will explore a pilot connecting JPYSC with Open USD (OUSD), but no new transfer service is live. The practical change is a planned interoperability test, not a new way to exchange or spend stablecoins today.
What are SBI and Startale planning?
In its October 16 announcement, Startale said SBI Holdings and Startale had joined Open Standard, an alliance promoting OUSD, and would explore interoperability between OUSD and JPYSC. JPYSC is a yen-denominated trust-type stablecoin issued by SBI Shinsei Trust Bank; OUSD is a U.S. dollar stablecoin. The companies describe the goal as more efficient settlement between yen and dollars, but give no pilot launch date, technical design or transaction terms.
The announcement says the work is exploratory and does not represent a commercial service, production settlement or trading activity. It also does not say that a conversion route, exchange rate, fee schedule or supported network has been set for a JPYSC–OUSD transfer. For now, the announcement is a signal of intended collaboration, not an instruction to connect a wallet or move funds.
Can holders use JPYSC outside SBI VC Trade?
No: the SBI VC Trade JPYSC page says deposits and withdrawals are not currently supported. JPYSC is available for trading within SBI VC Trade accounts, but holders cannot send it to an external wallet through that service. The same page says public-chain circulation is a future aim, dependent on legal and tax treatment being clarified and regulatory confirmation.
That restriction matters because interoperability requires tokens to move between systems. Until SBI VC Trade enables withdrawals and the companies publish pilot details, a JPYSC holder cannot use the proposed work to pay in OUSD or settle a cross-border transfer. The announcement names no eligibility rules or steps for joining a pilot, so users should check for a later notice before acting on the plan.
What should users check before making plans?
Check whether a future update specifies which networks are supported, how the two tokens would be exchanged, and who can participate. The announcement supplies none of those operational details, and it gives no fee or timeline for the pilot. It also does not say whether a finished connection would be open to retail users or limited to institutional participants.
For now, the confirmed development is SBI and Startale joining Open Standard and exploring a pilot, while JPYSC remains unavailable for external transfers through SBI VC Trade. Any estimate of when users could move between yen and dollar stablecoins would go beyond what the companies have announced.
